good article. u know all these stuid happening never really bother teh common man. life goes on. whoever is there nothing ever changes for us or for teh downtrodden or for teh farners who commit suidcides orteh wome or teh children. it wil be teh same.
Its not so simple. Life never is. Fact is Trade is not free nor fair. The tatas, reliance and the rest did not become big companies by distributing their wealth. remember the PMs comments on CEO salaries? A peice of land wether a100 or 0.001 acres for any individual is a legacy. It stems from the traditional words 'tilling the soild of teh land with the sweat of my brow etc. etc. A farmer depends on his land, it is his life blood, it is his mother, it is his livelihood. Attempting to take that away from him by promising education and employment and what not - things which ppl like tata or birla could not care less about is criminal to say the least.
You talk abou the need for employment, education, microfinance etc as if it is a continuum of grabbing their land. This should be tried before grabbing the farmers land. Free the farmer from the dependence he has on his land and then ask him to sell. Maybe he will, maybe he will not. its his wish.
On the other hand how many of you really watched the bangladeshi tigers on their way to victory over India and during their loss to srilanka. If u did not, then watch the match again. It was a pleasure to see them bat, bowl and feild. The perfect combination of experience and youth fostered by a very good selection system. That system was explained during the match too. Their commitment was there for all to see. You could practically see the desire to win in their every action. They may not win teh cup but they sure did win a lot of hearts.
Remember people when u debate this topic that beef is the cheapest and quickest source of protein available to mankind and could be a boon to millions of malnourished children and people today if only they were allowed to consume it.
On the other hand because of our benevolence India has the highest population of cows anywehere in the world and some of the lowest milk yields on this planet simply because there are too many cows to feed.
Such large numbers of cows also mean that they denude what ever fauna comes in their way resulting in other problems like increased erosion, loss of top soil, reduced yeilds and drought.
Yesterday on CNN - IBN, a minister from teh UP Gov't thanked various news channels for concentrating their attention on UP and bringing a bad image to UP and all UPians. Goes to show how callous these SOBs can be.
There is no percentage in accusing the west or the past for the ills which plague our country. we had more than half a century to set right the wrongs which we attribute to them. we have failed. it is only now that there has been some rationalisation of thought among the indian populace and our politicians. At this juncture we should emulate success and at the same time temper it with the hard experience of a thousand years of heritage and culture and not ignore them completely.
